About the Palestinian
Refugees Film Festival for Short Films
Shoruq’s Palestinian Refugees Film
Festival is considered
the first international film festival in Palestine specialized in short films
that tackle issues of refugees in general and Palestinian refugees in the
Occupied Territories and the diaspora. Accordingly, this festival joins other
international festivals in concentrating on refugees, their fundamental human
rights, which include liberty and freedom of expression, and their active
participation in demanding these fundamental rights.
The festival will screen a diverse
range of films from June 1 to June 20, 2021. Films will be carefully selected
from among the films submitted for this important event. Approximately 15 hours of films of various lengths and
genres will be screened during the festival, which will comprise documentary,
narrative, experimental, and artistic films.
The festival will also host a
group of international professionals to
hold workshops and open discussions on several topics of interest to Filmmaking

enhance the culture of cinema in Palestine and elevate Palestinian Filmmaking
students to the international standards for their profession in this domain.

Names of the Previous Winning Films
‘My
Uncle Nasser,’ a film directed
by Ahmad Hamash that explores the case of Nasser Subuh, a person with Down
Syndrome, who lives in Dheisheh Refugee Camp.
‘Abandoned,’ a short film directed by Musab Mahmoud that reflects
the struggles of the family and is influenced by the challenges associated with
political conflicts. The film mainly focuses on the inevitable impact of these
political conflicts, shedding light on individuals, who tend to be considerably
affected in the vast majority of cases and are, in fact, the actual victims of
these conflicts.
“Ala Ajal,’
a documentary short film
directed by Tansim Abu Al-Sukkar that deals with boxing in Baqa’a camp. The
film explores the inspiring story of a boxing player who descends from a family
deeply associated with this sport. Despite encountering many difficulties in
his life to pursue this sport, especially from his work as it limits his free
time, the protagonist was still able to several championships. The film specifically
sheds light on Baqa’a camp’s club, which was founded by Captain Mohamed Ashish,
as the sole outlet and safe haven for the children of this champ, who practice boxing, from delinquency,
ultimately leaving some to be world champions.
